Green Batteries for a Blue Planet.
Impact Rating

Green Batteries for a Blue Planet.
Company Overview
Northvolt produces green batteries with a 90% lower carbon footprint compared to batteries made with coal energy. They are committed to powering their factories with renewable energy and have a strong focus on battery recycling to minimise resource use and close the loop on battery production.
These batteries are commonly used in electronic devices, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems. The market for lithium-ion batteries has recently grown rapidly due to the increasing demand for portable electronics and the shift towards renewable energy sources.
Northvolt's Impact
Northvolt’s low-carbon footprint comes from their commitment to power their factories with clean, renewable energy. Combine that with minimal resource use alongside battery recycling and you have the blueprint for the world’s greenest battery.
Northvolt's Mission and Values
Their mission is to accelerate the transition to a decarbonized future by supplying sustainable and high-quality battery cells and systems.
Current Investors
Investors include Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Volkswagen Group, Folksam Group, Baillie Gifford, Ava Investors, Swedbank Robur, PCS Holding, Olympia Group, TM Capital and others.
Northvolt's Growth Strategy and Use of Funds
Northvolt announced they will be using funds in its expansion of battery cell and cathode material production in Europe to support the rapidly expanding demand for batteries.
Risks associated with Northvolt
Local environmental problems associated with the production of batteries include air pollution, waste and wastewater, as well as potential biodiversity risks from the construction of facilities. Northvolt plan to mitigate this risk by using recycled materials from dead batteries in the production of the new batteries.
How are Northvolt driving innovation?
With a highly automised, digitalised, and vertically integrated manufacturing process, Northvolt allows for full traceability of all components as well as augmented reuse and recycling of products and raw materials.
New initiative from Northvolt’s subsidiary Cuberg will enable electric aviation operators and manufacturers with reliable, high-performance and sustainable battery systems. Lithium metal battery technology will provide the foundation to enable electric aviation with high energy density and low weight.
